It's the question every skier heading to the Snowy Mountains eventually faces. The good news: both resorts are fantastic, and both have so much to offer. We will give you the insider's perspective — here's what makes each one exceptional.

Thredbo — long lunches and great runs

Thredbo is Australia's most celebrated ski resort — and we love it for reasons that go beyond the raw statistics. Yes, it has the country's longest runs and its greatest vertical drop (672 metres), and the 14 lifts serve a genuinely good variety of terrain across all ability levels. Merritts and Friday Flat cater well for beginners — gentle, well-supervised slopes with a dedicated ski school — while intermediate and advanced skiers will find excellent terrain higher up, from long cruisy blues off the Kosciuszko Express to steeper blacks like the Funnel Web. It is a mountain with something for everyone, and it is difficult to exhaust in a day.

But what we really love Thredbo for is the experience around the skiing. A long lunch mid-mountain with a view that makes you forget to check the time. The winter concert series — live music in an alpine village setting is hard to beat anywhere in Australia, and Thredbo pulls it off exceptionally. The village itself has a compact, European character, and the après-ski scene is the best in the mountains. For a day that starts with great runs and finishes with a long dinner and live music, Thredbo is the destination.

One more thing worth knowing: the Alpine Coaster — the Southern Hemisphere's first, opened in 2024 — operates year-round at Thredbo, including in winter. A 1.5km track with tunnels, bridges and self-controlled speeds of up to 40km/h. It can be added on to your lift pass and is genuinely fun for all ages — a great option for a non-skiing member of the group, or as a novelty finish to a ski day.

Best value pass for Thredbo — Ikon Pass

For best value at Thredbo, the Ikon Pass or the Thredbo season pass are the right choices. Both offer significant savings over day tickets — and as with all ski passes, the earlier you buy, the better the price. Prices increase materially as the season approaches, so locking in early is simply worth it.

Perisher — fantastic variety and expansive terrain

Perisher is the largest ski resort in Australia by a significant margin — and the scale is genuinely impressive. At 1,245 hectares across four resort areas and 47 lifts, the terrain across Perisher Valley, Smiggin Holes, Blue Cow and Guthega spans seven peaks, meaning there is always somewhere productive to ski regardless of weather conditions. If one side of the mountain is being hammered by wind or flat light, you move to another. For a week-long trip, you will not exhaust the terrain. You will discover runs on day five that you hadn't noticed on day one.

The terrain is genuinely varied — beginner to expert, and everything in between — with a down-to-earth atmosphere that feels authentically alpine without the premium that comes with being in a fashionable village. There are runs for every level of skier in the group, which means mixed-ability groups can split and reunite without anyone feeling they've drawn the short straw. And if you're fortunate with timing, you may find yourself watching Olympic-level mogul skiers and park and pipe athletes training on the dedicated freestyle terrain — the kind of incidental spectacle that makes an ordinary ski day feel like something more.

Then there are the hidden gems — runs and features that regulars know about and guests rarely find on their first visit. We prefer to share these in person with guests who stay. Feel free to ask us about local secrets when you arrive — the insider knowledge is genuinely worth having.

Getting there — the ski tube and the shuttle

The ski tube departs from Bullocks Flat, about a minute from Lake Crackenback Resort — no driving on icy, snowy roads, no snow chains required. The winter resort bus runs around the resort and to the ski tube terminal, making the whole journey from chalet door to tube completely effortless. It is one of those small logistical wins that makes the Perisher day feel easy from the moment you wake up.

The value tip — Epic Pass with ski tube add-on

For best value, we recommend the Epic Pass with the ski tube access add-on. The ski tube is not automatically included in the standard Epic Pass, so adding it at the time of purchase is the smart move. Buy early — Epic Pass prices increase as the season approaches, and the savings on an early purchase can be significant for a family or group.

"Four resort areas, seven peaks. Always somewhere to ski. A winter resort bus gets you around the resort and to the ski tube with no fuss. And occasionally, if the timing is right, an Olympian training in the moguls below you. That's a Perisher day."

Why not both?

From Crackenback, skiing both resorts in the same trip is genuinely straightforward. Perisher via the ski tube — about a minute away with a winter resort bus to get you there, no driving required. Thredbo when you want the longest runs, a long lunch mid-mountain or the energy of the village for a winter concert. Charlotte's Pass when you want something quieter and more remote. The chalets handle the rest: the drying room manages the gear, the full kitchen handles the morning, and the resort pool and spa handles the recovery.

The beauty of Crackenback is that you make the decision fresh each morning based on conditions, energy and mood — without any logistical friction either way.

Why coming home to Crackenback beats staying on snow

This is the part that surprises guests who have only ever stayed in Thredbo village or on-snow at Perisher. Both offer the obvious convenience of proximity to the lifts. But proximity to the lifts is only valuable for roughly eight hours of the day. What about the other sixteen?

If you stay in the village or on-snow, your options after skiing are essentially the resort precinct — eat, drink and sleep. There is nothing wrong with that, and the village atmosphere at Thredbo in particular is genuinely enjoyable. But it does not offer the wide range of free facilities that are available during your stay at Crackenback. The pool, spa, sauna, gym, golf, kayaking and the whole resort activity programme are simply not part of the picture when you're staying on-snow.

At Crackenback, the day after skiing has genuine options. A proper post-ski recovery with a sauna and a cold plunge in the lake. A gym session if you prefer that kind of punishment. A round of golf if conditions allow. Or — and this is what most guests actually choose — a wine by the firepit as the mountains go dark, with Perrotta's Italian two minutes away and nothing urgent happening at all. That is what the chalet is built for, and it is what makes the difference between a good ski trip and a great one.

The verdict

Both resorts are fantastic. Thredbo for the village feel and Australia's longest runs. Perisher for fantastic variety, expansive terrain, and the convenience of the ski tube.

Both have so much to offer — and from Crackenback, you have access to both without moving accommodation. Thredbo for long lunches, village energy and winter concerts. Perisher for sheer scale, hidden gems and effortless ski tube access. The chalet handles everything else: the drying room, the kitchen, the firepit and the resort facilities waiting when you get home. Ask us about the local secrets when you arrive.

Common questions

Is Thredbo or Perisher better for skiing?

Both are fantastic and have so much to offer. Thredbo is renowned for Australia's longest runs, its greatest vertical drop and a lively village atmosphere with excellent dining, après-ski and winter concerts. Perisher offers fantastic variety and expansive terrain across four resort areas and seven peaks, with the added convenience of a ski tube about a minute from the chalets, served by a winter resort bus. From Crackenback you can enjoy both without having to choose.

What is the best value ski pass for Perisher?

The Epic Pass with the ski tube access add-on is the best value option for skiing Perisher from Lake Crackenback. The ski tube is not automatically included in the standard Epic Pass, so adding it at purchase is important. Buy early — Epic Pass prices increase significantly as the season approaches.

Is there a shuttle bus from Lake Crackenback to the Perisher ski tube?

Yes — a winter resort bus runs around Lake Crackenback Resort and to the ski tube terminal at Bullocks Flat, about a minute from the chalets. There is no need to drive or navigate icy roads to reach the tube. Combined with the ski tube itself, getting to Perisher from the chalet is completely straightforward.

Can you ski both Thredbo and Perisher in the same trip?

Yes — and Piste Luxury Chalet at Lake Crackenback is perfectly placed for it. The ski tube to Perisher is about a minute from the chalets, with a winter resort bus to get you there; Thredbo is 15 minutes by car. The decision is made fresh each morning based on conditions and mood — no logistical friction either way.

Why is staying at Crackenback better than staying in Thredbo village or on-snow at Perisher?

Proximity to the lifts is valuable for around eight hours of the day. For the other sixteen, staying on snow or in the village offers limited options — eat, drink and sleep, essentially. At Crackenback you have a sauna and cold plunge in the lake, a gym, golf, the resort pool and spa, Perrotta's Italian two minutes from the door, and a firepit under the mountains. Access to both Perisher and Thredbo without moving accommodation. And a designer chalet that is materially better than anything available at either resort at a comparable price point.

Which ski resort is better for families with young children?

Both are good for families. Thredbo has a ski school at Friday Flat with gentle, supervised beginner terrain well-suited to young learners. Perisher offers extensive beginner areas across all four resort areas, with ski school at Perisher Valley and Smiggins, and a relaxed pace that suits mixed-ability groups. The ski tube is about a minute from the chalets with a winter resort bus to get you there — no driving children on icy mountain roads required. Back at the resort, trampolines, kayaking, paddleboarding, a playground and the adventure ropes course are all included in your stay.

Is spring skiing good in the Snowy Mountains?

Yes — September and October offer good spring skiing at both Thredbo and Perisher, with quieter slopes and shoulder-season prices. Perisher's four resort areas and seven peaks mean there is always terrain in productive condition whatever the spring weather brings. This is often the best value time to visit for those with flexibility on dates.
