We know the first question guests ask when they discover us: "Which chalet?" It's a good question because the two are different by design — built to serve different travelling parties, different group sizes, different ways of experiencing the mountains. Here's everything you need to make that call with confidence.

Two offerings. One philosophy.

Piste Luxury Chalet was built around a straightforward belief: that a stay in the Snowy Mountains should feel as considered and comfortable as anywhere else you might choose to spend a special few days. The mountains here are spectacular — the accommodation that surrounds them, historically, hasn't always matched.

We're proud to be listed by snowymountains.com.au as one of the best places to stay in the Snowy Mountains — a recognition that reflects what guests consistently tell us, and what our five-star Google reviews bear out: that the combination of location, design and attention to detail is genuinely hard to find elsewhere in the region.

What sets both chalets apart is that commitment to quality: soaring raked ceilings, designer appliances, luxe contemporary interiors, and a location inside Lake Crackenback Resort and Spa that puts resort facilities, ski access and mountain scenery all within easy reach. The two offerings differ in scale and configuration — designed specifically to cater for different group sizes, each exceptional in its own right.

Piste Luxury Chalet — The Petite is crafted for couples, honeymooners and small families — an intimate boutique experience where every detail is close at hand. Piste Luxury Chalet — The Grande answers a different brief: larger families and groups who want the full luxury chalet experience without splitting across multiple properties. Diagonally across the road from The Petite, it brings the same design sensibility to a more expansive footprint — four king-sized bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, sleeping up to eight guests.

The Petite — intimate by design

Perched high on the hill to take full advantage of its aspect, The Petite is a chalet that opens up as you move through it. The architecture follows the contour of the land — a modern facade that sits unobtrusively within the native landscape, the roofline soaring toward the back as the building drops across two storeys.

Space and layout

Two king-sized bedrooms sleep up to five, with the option to configure the second bedroom as a king, two singles, or three with the trundle — handy flexibility for different combinations of guests. A second living area downstairs gives everyone some breathing room, while the main open-plan kitchen, dining and living space upstairs flows directly onto the large entertaining deck. The study nook beside the fireplace is a quietly popular spot — for those who need to touch base with work, or simply want somewhere calm to sit with a book.

The deck view tends to be the thing guests mention most. 270 degrees of Crackenback Ridge and Porcupine Ridge, the lake shimmering below — it's a view that makes it genuinely hard to leave the chalet at all.

The fireplace

At the heart of The Petite sits a central gas fireplace — and it earns its place. After a long day on the mountain, boots in the drying room and a glass of something cold in hand, there is something quietly perfect about collapsing in front of it while the temperature outside drops and the ridge darkens to a silhouette. It is the kind of warmth that makes a holiday feel like a holiday. In summer, it remains a focal point — evenings in the mountains cool quickly even in January, and the fireplace gives the living space an unhurried, gathered feeling that no amount of panel heating quite replicates.

Picture this — The Petite, mid-winter

Snow has fallen overnight. You wake to silence, pour a coffee from the Smeg machine, and carry it to the deck still in your robe. The ridge is white. The lake catches the early light. Back inside, the fireplace is already on — low, steady, the kind of warmth you feel in your shoulders first. You are fifteen minutes from Thredbo's lifts. You are in absolutely no hurry to leave.

Designer interiors and industry recognition

The Petite's interiors have earned recognition well beyond the mountains. The chalet has been featured by GlobeWest — one of Australia's leading designer furniture and homewares suppliers — a reflection of the considered approach taken to every piece of furniture and every material choice inside. It has also been showcased by Knotwood, whose architectural aluminium systems feature in the building's distinctive exterior detailing, and by Prefabulous, the publication dedicated to the finest prefabricated and modular architecture in Australia. A shortlisting for the prestigious Colorbond People's Choice Award and a feature by luxury mirror and hardware specialist Future Glass round out a design pedigree that speaks for itself.

None of this is incidental. The recognition reflects a deliberate philosophy: that every surface, every fitting and every finish should be chosen rather than simply specified. Guests feel this without necessarily being able to name it — it's the reason the chalet photographs beautifully and feels even better in person.

Piste Luxury Chalet — The Petite

"Have just stayed a week at this gorgeous chalet and wow! I have been coming to the Snowy Mountains for many, many years (and used to live here!) and can confidently say this is one of the best, most comfortable, well equipped and special places I have stayed. It was really well set up with everything you'd need, the hosts were incredibly helpful and understanding, and the vibe was just perfect. Will definitely be staying again."

Google Review — Piste Luxury Chalet — The Petite

"The Petite wraps around you. It's the kind of place that feels right for two people celebrating something, or a small family who wants a proper base — somewhere that feels genuinely special rather than just convenient."

The Grande — room for everyone

Designed specifically for larger travelling parties, The Grande tackles the problem that bigger groups consistently face in the mountains: the choice between splitting across multiple properties or settling for something that fits the numbers but not the standard. The Grande was built to remove that compromise entirely.

Space and layout

Four king-sized bedrooms — each with its own bathroom — sleep up to eight guests with a level of privacy and comfort that makes a shared chalet actually work. The generous open-plan living, dining and kitchen areas are designed for coming together without crowding each other out. A kitchen fitted out for groups who actually want to cook together — not just heat things up — anchors the social heart of the chalet.

The fireplace and the outdoor firepit

The Grande has two fire experiences — and together they define the rhythm of an evening here. Inside, the fireplace anchors the living space in exactly the way a chalet fireplace should: something to gather around after dinner, to fill silences with, to make the cold outside feel like part of the pleasure rather than a problem to solve.

Outside is where The Grande distinguishes itself further. The outdoor firepit on the entertaining deck is the kind of feature that sounds nice on paper and exceeds expectations in practice. Eight people seated around an open fire, the Crackenback Ridge rising dark against a sky full of stars, mountain air sharp and clean — it is the scene that makes a group trip memorable in a way that no restaurant or bar quite manages. Someone will inevitably say they don't want to go back inside. They're right not to.

Picture this — The Grande, a Friday night in July

Eight of you have finished dinner. The dishes are done, the wine is open, and someone has already moved to the deck. The firepit is lit — orange light, real warmth, the smell of a mountain night. Across the valley, the ridge is dark and enormous. Nobody is looking at their phone. This is exactly what the trip was supposed to feel like. Inside, the fireplace holds a low flame for when the cold eventually wins. It hasn't won yet.

The entertaining deck

The Grande's deck is designed for exactly this: extended time outdoors with people you want to be with. Generous in scale, it accommodates the full group comfortably — morning coffee, afternoon drinks after a day on the slopes, and long evenings around the firepit as the mountains do what mountains do at night. The views are the same ones that make this part of the Snowy Mountains so exceptional — the kind that stop a conversation mid-sentence and remind you why you came.

Architecture, interiors and recognition

The Grande is a considered piece of architecture in its own right. The Knotwood aluminium architectural system features in the building's exterior — that same clean, considered materiality that reads as contemporary without being cold. GlobeWest furnishings bring the same quality of furniture specification found in The Petite, ensuring the interior feels cohesive and genuinely designed rather than assembled. The Grande has been featured by Prefabulous — recognition that the architecture itself, not just the interiors, is worthy of attention. These are not chalets that happened to look good. They were designed to.

Piste Luxury Chalet — The Grande

"We stayed at Piste Luxury Chalet – The Grande for a girls' retreat weekend, and honestly, we didn't want to leave! From the moment we arrived, everything about this chalet exceeded our expectations — it's luxurious, beautifully designed, and perfectly set up for groups. Each of us had our own gorgeous king bedroom and private bathroom (no sharing, no queues — bliss!), and every space in the house oozed sophistication and warmth. The interiors are stunning — designer furnishings, original artworks, and high-end finishes that make you feel completely indulged. The large kitchen and living area were perfect for cooking, chatting, and laughing around the fireplace with a glass of wine in hand. The outdoor fire pit was a total highlight — we spent hours under the stars, toasting marshmallows and soaking up the serenity. The location is unbeatable — set within Lake Crackenback Resort, so we could wander to the restaurants, enjoy the pool, gym, and walking trails, or just take in the incredible mountain views. It's also just minutes to the ski tube or a short drive to Thredbo, which made it so easy to explore. Every detail has been thought of, from the top-notch appliances to the cosy throws and thoughtful layout. It's a dream for design lovers and entertainers alike — spacious, private, and immaculately presented. We left feeling refreshed, connected, and already planning our next trip back. Truly one of the best places we've ever stayed — 10/10 in every way!"

"The Grande is for the group that refuses to split up — where the whole point of the trip is being together. Four bedrooms, four bathrooms, a firepit under the stars, and one chalet that earns its name without trying too hard."

What both chalets share

Whichever you choose, a few things are guaranteed. Both chalets sit within Lake Crackenback Resort and Spa — rated Australia's Best Ski Hotel 2021 — and your stay includes access to the full range of resort facilities. In winter that means a heated indoor pool, gym, sauna, and two minutes to the ski tube for Perisher and Charlotte's Pass, with Thredbo just 15 minutes by car. In summer it shifts to kayaking on the lake, archery, golf, tennis, mountain biking, bushwalks, the adventure ropes course, river swimming and fishing. The restaurants — Alpine Larder and Cuisine — are a two-minute walk from both chalets.

Both are available year-round. Both are the same distance from the mountains. And both are held to exactly the same standard of finish, comfort and care — the standard that guests reference in five-star review after five-star review on Google.

SeasonYear-round — winter and summer

A destination for every season

One of the most common misconceptions about the Snowy Mountains is that they are a winter destination. They are not — or at least, not only. The region around Crackenback and Lake Crackenback Resort delivers something genuinely different in each season, and both chalets are positioned to make the most of all of it. If anything, the warmer months reveal a landscape that surprises people who only know the mountains under snow.

Winter — ski season

Winter is the headline act, and for good reason. With Thredbo just 15 minutes by car and the ski tube to Perisher right next door, both chalets place you at the centre of Australia's premier ski country. Thredbo offers the country's longest runs and greatest vertical drop — it rewards skiers of every level, from beginners on Friday Flat to experienced riders pushing the steeper terrain. Perisher is the largest resort in Australia by sheer scale, with multiple village areas, 47 lifts and terrain that takes a full week to properly explore. Come back to the chalet, pull off the ski boots in the drying room, and settle in front of the fireplace. That is the winter rhythm here, and it's a good one.

Spring and autumn — trail running and ultra marathons

The shoulder seasons are when serious runners and trail athletes descend on the Snowy Mountains in earnest — and for good reason. The alpine trails around Thredbo and the broader Kosciuszko National Park offer some of the most spectacular and challenging running terrain in Australia. The headline event is the Ultra-Trail Kosciuszko (UTK), presented by UTMB — one of the most prestigious trail running events in the country and part of the UTMB World Series. Held annually in late November, it draws over 3,500 athletes from across the world, with four race distances: the Kosci30, Kosci50, Kosci100 and the KosciMiler at 160km. All distances finish at Friday Flat in Thredbo, and the atmosphere throughout the event is electric. Trail Run Australia Snowy Mountains is another fixture on the calendar, with distances from 5km to 50km ultra traversing the Thredbo Valley and the shores of Lake Jindabyne — a genuine festival of trail running for all levels. The Thredbo Fun and Fitness Week, held with the Canberra Runners Club, adds the iconic Kosciuszko Classic — a 5km race to the summit of Mount Kosciuszko — and the Crackenback Challenge, a punishing 2km with 600 metres of climbing.

Beyond the events calendar, the broader network of single-track, fire road and alpine trail provides year-round options for those who simply want to run hard through a beautiful landscape without a race bib. The crisp air, the elevation and the absence of summer heat make spring and autumn the sweet spot for anyone who takes their running seriously. Both chalets are well set up for the athlete: full laundry, drying facilities, a kitchen that supports proper post-run nutrition, and the resort's pool and spa for recovery. The combination of hard days on the trail and genuine luxury back at the chalet is, frankly, one of the better arguments for booking either property in the shoulder months.

Summer — mountain biking and hiking

When the snow melts, the mountains reveal a network of trails that draws mountain bikers and hikers from across the country. Thredbo's lift-accessed bike park opens for summer with trails ranging from gentle flow runs to technical descents that test even experienced riders. The broader Kosciuszko National Park offers everything from the iconic summit walk to Mount Kosciuszko — Australia's highest peak — to longer multi-day routes through the Main Range. The trails are genuinely world-class, the wildflower season in late spring and early summer is extraordinary, and the lack of crowds compared to a ski weekend makes for an entirely different experience of the same landscape.

Mountain biking at Lake Crackenback Resort itself has its own tracks and pump tracks included in your stay. For those who want to extend further, the riding through the Thredbo Valley and beyond offers days of exploration without touching the same trail twice. Come back to the chalet with mud on your tyres and something to look forward to on the deck.

Year-round — fishing

Fly fishing in the Snowy Mountains is a pursuit that operates quietly and devotedly across all seasons, drawing anglers who understand that the rivers and streams around Crackenback, Thredbo and the broader national park hold some of the finest trout fishing in Australia. The Thredbo River is the local classic — clear, cold and productive — while Lake Crackenback itself offers fishing directly from the resort. For guests who carry a rod, both chalets provide an ideal base: close to water, comfortable to return to, and equipped for the kind of early-start, long-day rhythm that fishing tends to demand.
